Built in circa 1870, Glenfergus Homestead was the original site of market gardens feeding local communities and developed into a 30,000 acre sheep grazing property (as a defined province sharing Cooma's 2030 postcode), with the oldest slab sheering shed in the Monaro still remaining.

In the late 1900's Glenfergus began to graze Black Angus cattle alongside the traditional history of grazing sheep. Later Friesian and Jersey cattle were introduced to the property. This was to supply dairy farms with milk ready dairy cows pre giving birth. This was affected by prolonged drought and Covid-19 effectively.

The introduction of Red Angus, will see Glenfergus enter a new phase of crossbreeding cattle, designed to produce excellent fertility, low maintenance costs and a healthier and more profitable herd. Our new Glenfergus-Cross will be a systematic three-way crossbreeding program of these breeds.

Why combine these three dairy breeds?

Glenfergus-Cross cows are based on the highly successful Viking Genetics crossbreeding program of Viking Holstein, Viking Red and Viking Jersey whose tri-crossbreeds are recognised as being amongst the top scoring breeds for health and production traits worldwide. Each breed have their own breed improvement programme with high-ranking bulls.

This combination of tri-crossbreds are healthy at their core, with superior reproduction traits, they live longer in your herd and give you a higher lifetime profit per cow. The phenomenon that progeny of this specific tri-crossbreed of species, exhibit greater biomass, speed of development, and fertility than the respective breed of the parents is an extra benefit.

The end result is a herd of ideally sized grazing cows with optimum health and a superior tolerance to weather extremes. Glenfergus-Cross cows are also equipped to walk long distances for grazing, and are equipped to walk between barns and the field due to their economical frame size and strong feet with dark hooves.
